Why I dropped Pre - Med?

It is an interesting title, particularly in this age when a lot of school leavers are keen to be working in this field. The title above does not belong to me, but rather by a student, Cornell bound, by the name of Nina Zhang. Being an excellent student, who participated in many activities, it is therefore a natural inclination for her to be pursuing a Degree Programme as such. As she mentioned it, her primary focus was for her love for science. Her noble intention aimed, at pursuing a career which she would help others healthier and a fuller lives.

As she puts it, over time, many of her friends changed plans, some went on to pursue PhD in Science, others in Hotel Administration etc.

However, my main interest in reading her article, is when she says 'in college, life changes in ways you could never expect or imagine. Choosing to deviate from a course of study that has guided you since childhood can be an especially hard choice.'

'Between classes, I talked to my fellow students, about why they wanted to become doctors. The Hippocratic Oath had little to do with it' (sincerely speaking, I really love her honesty). Many cited doctors' high income.

Well.. I do hope, our students, or specifically who came to me for interviews...will be aware I know.. what is the reason beyond..

Common Sense

One of the most interesting expression, that I tend to over use, will always be 'common sense has become rare' or 'common sense is not so common anymore'. The reason being is because, it is amazing, when I came a across certain questions, which do not require rocket science knowledge yet, it was seen in that light.

My point is, for example, University entrance is normally (if not mandatory), upon completing High School. I have to ensure, that these applicants met the MINIMUM REQUIREMENT, and at the same time has the minimum age to apply. Recently, I do not know, whether I should laugh, or I should be sorry for an 18 years old. This applicant was asking me, if he can study apply to study, and since he completed his O - Levels, and since MPEC EDULINK does arrangement for Pre - University Programme, I reckon, my applicant will have the common sense to think, and understand that the beginning age will be at 17. However, his answer made me really wonder, how students these days think. He told me, that, since I mentioned that application can be at 17, he told me, that IT COULD BE A PROBLEM BECAUSE HE IS ALREADY 18!!!

Now, how could this go any worse than it already is? I really hope that, applicants will fit the bill to apply when applying, and I really hope, that common sense will in fact be common, and not a rare occurrence...

May God bless us all...

The Right Attitude

An applicant, be it for a university application, or a job interview, needs to be down to earth, something, I realise to be seriously lacking these days among youngsters. Research says that it is 99% attitude and 1% skills, I fully acknowledged that, just wonder, whether it is really adhered to by people, be it professional or students, or it has become mere rhetoric for high school students. But again, we cannot blame the young when the old are just the same. How many times have we come across situation when the so-called seniors, were not willing to listen, to others but remain dogmatic?

So, it has become heredity, and I just wonder, if there is an end to all this, or perhaps, everyone will live in ignorance and eventually hypocrisy. Nevertheless, the what is right remains right, it is not poetic justice.

Recently, I got an applicant, as usual, it is always enquiries, and I do wonder, if a University is actually more inferior, than the applicant. It is more like a chicken and egg situation, is it the University that exist, or it will not exist without student?

I guess, the humility that matters, an applicant need to have the right attitude, as Homme d'Affaires, I just wonder what is in the minds of these applicants. Are they really thinking they are doing the University a favour by enrolling, or do these students realise how lucky they are to be accepted in 'Menara Gading'. This is what I mean having to come to basic.

As MPEC Edulink, the word 'rescuing students' refers to those who value good education, and appreciate the opportunity which exist and given. But again, human being human, as the Malay adage 'hangat-hangat tahi ayam', every New Year, there will be New Resolution, after a couple of months, it waned. The same thing for students eventually 'accepted', the same thing for employees in their comfort zone, eventually, being very lackadaisical and improper. There are exception, but what I am seeing is becoming a norm..

Does anyone know the fine line between personal and professional? I reckon, the current training in education, lacks the in - depth of this matter. What a sad day for our students..

History

It is about human and its activities, we just need to know and understand, about oneself, community and country, because what happened today is attributed to changes which took place years ago. Only by researching history, then one can understand clearly present society and country. When one learn History, one will realize that History is actually knowledge, skills and values. Therefore it is important to have the right attitude towards learning and eventually appreciate History.
History gives us understanding and even guide us so as to ensure that we do not commit mistake at present day, normally this is what became ‘grave mistake in history’, when a significant person made the mistake towards decision making or action. Unfortunately, people never learn, and keep allowing such History to keep repeating itself
History also contributes by giving credit where it is due especially for National Leaders. What is so important about History, it enables us to build self pride and national charisma.
One get to follow interesting stories about the hardship of previous leaders, its contribution to nation and society, warriors sacrificing themselves for justice, brave citizens and having staunch loyalty to King and Country. In fact, one may also learn about traditions and cultures via learning History. Everything has its own reason, there is never just a co-incidence..
