Doctors are men who prescribe medicines of which they know little, to cure diseases of which they know less, in human beings of whom they know nothing

Voltaire (1694 – 1778)

Medical Doctor, for long, has always been seen as a noble and exceptional profession. They have always had a special place in society; even earning respect and admiration, often even akin to demigod. In their hands, the power to heal is entrusted.

The life and death of patients is literally conditioned by a doctor’s diagnosis and treatment. In the mounting desperation for quick recovery, they often swallow whatever the doctor prescribes or tell them to do, sometimes without even bothering to inquire back or seek a second opinion.

Without undermining their professionalism, doctors are, after all, ordinary human beings bound by inherent limitations and imperfections, capable of being life saver but capable also of being life taker.

The role doctors play in a country’s development is undoubtedly of paramount importance. The image of doctors conveys metaphorically something of holy men or guardian angels. They are to be duly respected and trusted.

Their recommendation and prescription is to be taken as mantra that will save our life. While this is mostly true in many cases, it is also misleading notion to cast doctors in this apotheosis image.

There have been quite a number of conflicts between doctors and their patients in recent years – from allegations of malpractice and breach of Hippocratic Oath and Professional Code of Ethics.

“Why then, do we have faith in the doctor’s prescription?”

Space Station

A Space Station is an artificial structure designed for humans to live in outer space. So far only low earth orbit (LEO) stations also known as orbital stations have been implemented.

A space station is distinguished from other manned spacecraft by its lack of major propulsion or landing facilities instead other vehicles are used as transport to and from the station.

Space station are designed for medium term living in orbit, for periods of weeks, months or even years.

The only Space Stations currently in use is the International Space Station. Previous ones are Almaz, Salyut series, Skylab and Mir.

Space stations are currently (as of 2007) used to study the effects of long term space flight on the human body as well as to provide platforms for a greater number and length of scientific studies than available on other space vehicles.

Since the ill fated fight of Soyuz 11 to Salyut 1, all manned spaceflight duration records have been set aboard space stations.

The duration record for a single spaceflight is 437.7 days set by Valeriy Polyakov aboard Mir from 1994 to 1995.

As of 2008, three astronauts have completed single missions of over a year, all aboard Mir.

Out goes the lecturer

Thursday April 16, 2009

A UNIVERSITI Sains Islam Malaysia lecturer who passed only four out of 157 of her law students claims she was forced to resign so that the university could protect its reputation, Kosmo! reported.

Nor (not her real name) said the reason she left was because she could not stand the pressure from the university management on her to give “sympathy marks.”

“How am I to give extra marks if the marks they got is what they should be getting?” she said, adding that her downfall started when she received a show-cause letter on why so many students had failed.

She was then criticised by her superiors, who also wanted her to add marks based on attendance so as to reduce the number of failures.

“I stood my ground. How could I give them marks for that when it is their responsibility to show up for classes?” she added.

The university declined to comment.

It never failed to surprise me about what happened in the Educational system in Malaysia. I wonder the meaning of quality education, being an educational hub, being a centre for excellence, perhaps there is something wrong within us, and yet, there are many that 'menangguk di air keruh' - how nice to see the future of Malaysia.. Just to add, I have stated over and over again, to MMC Secretary that MPEC is not an agency, yet the letter I received is that, MMC does not deal with agency. Perhaps there is a linguistic problem to be diagnose

What is the meaning of 'application'?

It is a standard practice that when one applies, one is subjected to the authority that decides, whether or not, one's application is worthwhile to be APPROVED. Therefore, along the way, there will be procedures which may include verification, a deeper analysis and also the search for substantial evidence to support that 'application', however, along the way, it seems that 'applicant' always forget that they are the applicant, who is still subjected to the evaluation of the authorities in charge.

In education, it is not the applicant, but it is the education provider, that decides, and there are many factors related to this process. Nevertheless, the students who has been accepted, should be grateful, for having been accepted, and realise that, it is not always one can get accepted to this Institutions.

Hope MPEC applicants are 'wisen up'..
